Vegas Helps Uncover The Toledo Betting Scandal

The latest collegiate betting scandal has come to light in the last few weeks, as University of Toledo running back Scooter McDougle was indicted in US District Court on charges of 'participating in a bribery scheme to influence sporting contests.' As was the case in the another fairly recent betting scandal, a point shaving scheme among Arizona State basketball players, the legalized, regulated Las Vegas sportsbooks were instrumental in uncovering the plot.

The details of the game fixing charges are still murky, with federal authorities reticent to expose many of their allegations prior to a hearing later this week. We do know that a Sterling Heights, Michigan man by the name of Ghazi 'Gary' Manni, a 50-year-old businessman, is regarded as the ringleader of the caper according to the Toledo Blade. McDougle and Manni initially met at a Toledo cellular phone business owned by a friend of Manni's and frequented by Toledo athletes.

Manni allegedly invited the athletes to gamble and dine at Greektown Casino in Detroit. One player was offered $10,000 to sit out a football game, while others received cash, groceries, merchandise and other gifts. McDougle told FBI investigators he received a car, telephone and other items of value, but insisted he never changed the way he played to affect the outcome of games. In fact, the federal complaint gave no indication that players threw any games as part of the scheme.

According to the affidavit, the FBI recorded phone conversations between Manni and McDougle, beginning in November 2005. During one call in December 2005, McDougle said he would talk to other players and see if they could make money on a game between Toledo and Texas-El Paso, the complaint said. In a call later that month, McDougle said another player would be helping and asked Manni to make a $2,000 bet for him on the game, the complaint said.

The Rockets went on to beat UTEP 45-13 in the GMAC Bowl, covering the spread with ease as three point favorites. McDougle was injured much of the 2005 season and did not have any carries in the bowl game.

Also in December 2005, McDougle and unnamed UT football players were observed by FBI agents meeting with Gary at a Detroit restaurant and, later that evening, in the VIP area of the city's Greektown Casino. Other than McDougle, no other Toledo athletes were named in the affidavit or charged in the complaint. Nor did FBI investigators identify any football or basketball games they believe were altered by athletes connected to McDougle and Gary.

So far, according to the indictments, all we know is that at least one Toledo player wanted to bet ON his team to win and cover in their bowl game, very different from a typical point shaving scandal in which players are NOT supposed to cover the pointspread. And we know that Manni spent some time with McDougle and other Rockets players in a legal, licensed casino in Detroit.

After the indictments were handed down, the importance of the legal, regulated sportsbooks in Nevada came to light. Kenny White is the chief operating officer and head oddsmaker at Las Vegas Sports Consultants, instrumental in formulating the pointspread used at every casino in the state. White said that beginning in the 2004 season he and his associates noticed that there was heavy betting on certain Toledo football games and those of another Mid-American Conference team he declined to name.

"But then it stopped and it was just Toledo," he said. The unusual betting pattern continued into the 2005 season, according to White. As his suspicions grew, he watched tape of all of Toledo's football games in 2004 and 2005. "We really couldn't pinpoint a single player or coach or official," he said. "But we knew something was happening there."

White filed verbal reports with the Nevada Gaming Commission and the NCAA last summer. He declined to reveal the games he believes were affected by the alleged scheme, but he believes the bettors profited largely. "If they were giving a kid $10,000 to sit a game out, they probably were betting at least $100,000," he said. "I bet you if we tracked the roots, it wasn't one guy. Probably 100 people were in on this knowing what the right side was going to be in those games."

White said the bettors would not have wagered all their money in one place. "They have to spread them out. I'm sure they used offshore industries and they use Nevada because they know they're going to get paid," he said.

"Guys are trying to get to these players, and they tell them, 'Hey, you don't have to lose the game. You just don't have to cover the spread.' That seems to be the one common theme. And they talk [the players] into doing these crazy things," White said. "It's pretty big any time a point-shaving scheme happens. We're just glad the FBI found the information they needed and are headed in the right direction."

Las Vegas was aware of the betting irregularities nearly a year before the FBI had any idea that something was awry. It's not yet clear whether White's tipping off the Nevada Gaming authorities had any influence on the federal investigation, but the bottom line is that Vegas knew about the problem and took steps to correct it well before the feds got involved.

The previous major betting scandal in collegiate sports was also uncovered right here in Las Vegas. Legendary Mirage bookmaker Jimmy Vaccaro noticed highly unusual betting patterns involving Arizona State basketball games back in the mid 90's. He stopped taking action on or against the Sun Devils and alerted authorities, which directly resulted in the arrests and convictions of the ringleaders.

Fixing games is not a habitual problem in college sports. Some athletes are vulnerable to the 'good life' trappings offered by game fixers because they are living at or below the poverty line on campus while the university makes millions off their efforts. The Vegas casinos know that game fixing benefits no one except the fixers themselves, and have proven their medal in reporting these allegations to the proper authorities. Without these fully legal checks in place, betting scandals could continue unabated. In both the Toledo and the Arizona State schemes, there's absolutely no question that the Las Vegas sportsbooks have been a part of the solution, not the problem.

Like most little kids I too had a teddy bear or two when I was the little kid age. But no... they were waiting in line too. Along with some lady who was not the teddy bear age at all. In fact, she was clearly older then me and looked quite grotesque with these giant teddies... It suddenly occurred to me that this line was going to be long. And it was...

My right foot started to hurt me again and the stuff to support my living functions was feeling more and more like a ballast as I had to carry it in my hands and not in a basket. Baskets were out, teddy bears were in and the cashier had to check the price. For the teddies, of course. How do you pack a giant teddy bear? Using two bags because, obviously, the bags to pack giant teddy bears have yet to be be invented.

Finally, the teddies were out of my sight. The teddy bear lady handed her credit card to the cashier while smiling to me apologetically. "No problem," I said, "I hated teddy bears long before." I lied, but I do hate them now! This world would be a much better place without teddy bears!

Traveling Teddy Bears Show Me the Math - Part 2 - Literacy and Math

The area of mathematics does not function in isolation. The use of literacy skills in the form of the written word, oral communication and media allow for active problem solving within the context of the mathematics curriculum. Traveling teddy bears is a means by which students are actively engaged in their own learning. The reason for this is because the class set of teddy bears is traveling around the world and the various mathematical concepts are adapted within the class setting, to the information that arrives in the classroom, as a result of the teddy bear travels.

Before delving into the integration of literacy and math, the word, literacy, needs to be defined. There are 4 areas within the Language curriculum: Reading, Writing, Oral Language and Media. According to Dictionary.com, literacy makes direct reference to the state of being literate [having knowledge and skill] in the areas of reading and writing. Literacy also refer to ones knowledge in a particular area. For example: media literacy. The oral language form refers to a student's ability to communicate and express ideas and thoughts using the spoken word. These 4 areas, defined in the language curriculum, are easily integrated into the mathematics curriculum.

What further facilitates the combination of literacy and math is the incorporation of the information received from the traveling teddy bears: as the teddy bears experience the world, their traveling companions send back adventure stories to the classroom, or back to the student via email.

This is best illustrated using the following example. [Note: the teddy bear's name is real, the destinations are real and creative license has been used for illustrative purposes].

Iggy, the teddy bear was excited about his new journey. The traveling companion packed up his journal, bought him a warm sweater, and together with his travel bag, Iggy and the first traveling companion set off for California. There they enjoyed the sunsets and the beaches. After staying a couple of days, Iggy met a couple of other travelers who were going on a cruise to the Antarctic, so he was invited to tag along. What an adventure this was going to be for Iggy. One of their stops was in Buenos Aires, South America. Iggy could hardly contain his excitement when he had his picture taken with a number of dolls and toys that he befriended at one of the stores. Later, after having arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, Iggy had his photo taken on a mail box and with a member of the cruise ship. They cruised across Cape Horn, saw icebergs, traveled in a zodiac to see the whales, and landed on Antarctica to visit with Gentoo penguins, sea lions and other inhabitants. Iggy wanted to travel the penguin highways, but the traveling companions thought it best not to ride those slippery slopes.

Using the information in Iggy's story, possible math questions for the student to answer might look something like this. How long did it take for Iggy to travel from Point A to Point B? What was the distance traveled by Iggy the teddy bear? What temperatures did Iggy experience at his various destinations? [this might involve further research if the traveling companion did not record it in the teddy bear's journal] What are penguin highways and what is the average distance of a penguin highway? What is the distance between Ushuaia and Antarctica? How cold is the water where Iggy traveled? How does that compare with the temperatures experienced where you live? Gather data of dates, locations, times, and temperatures during Iggy's travels. Graph results using bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs. Do you notice patterns with your results?

During the course of answering the math related questions, the student would be using reading [reading the problem, research as required by the problem], writing [using the written word to record information], and oral language to communicate the results of the problem. As a possible extension to this math problem, a media presentation put together to communicate this information into a math story would round out the literacy and math connection.

Teddy bears and their travels not only benefit the students, but their ownership of the bears creates a sense of commitment to the project and willingness to want to work with information about their teddy bears. Teachers benefit because their students are motivated. Another benefit to teachers is the reduction in the number of evaluative devices required to assess the student: a multi-step mathematics problem integrates literacy concepts and math concepts thereby reducing the need for separate assessment vehicles. By following this approach, aspects of reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy can be evaluated at the same time assessment is being made of the math concepts being taught.

Mathematics is often viewed as a separate entity in the curriculum. By incorporating stories and adventures of teddy bear travels into the math curriculum, a number of benefits accrue: student communication of the results integrates the literacy component of the curriculum, it enhances and motivates student learning, and the integration reduces the number of assessment vehicles required by teachers in the evaluation of their students.

Men Must Never Commit To An Exclusive Relationship Early On Even If She Is The Only One You Want

Many times when two people get involved in a committed relationship rather quickly it is simply because they think they don't want to see anybody else.

More often than not the relationship becomes a committed relationship because the woman asked for it to be exclusive.
The man simply agreed because he didn't want to be with anyone else anyways.

Getting involved in a committed relationship with a woman simply because you don't want to see anyone else is never a good idea; especially early on.

Mainly, because the beginning of a relationship is always bound to have a certain level of infatuation to it

In other words, with or without being in a committed relationship she is only going to be with you.

When a woman wants to be in an exclusive relationship she will be in an exclusive relationship with you even if you don't agree to be in one with her.

Your agreement with her also puts her in control of the relationship because she now knows you aren't seeing anybody else and only want to be with her.

What this really means is her attraction level actually goes down while yours goes up.

If she is really willing to settle down it means she will begin settling in the relationship (gaining weight, decreased sex drive, etc...)

If she is not willing or ready to settle down it means she will begin looking for another man and eventually cheat on you or simply leave you if she is a woman who has a certain amount of moral decency.

In the end, as a man, you must never get involved in a serious and committed relationship early on simply because you don't want anybody else and she asked you to or you risk losing the very thing that was the reason for the agreement in the first place.
